Our Strengths Can Become Our Weaknesses

The following is an article, written by Sherron Watkins, a former Enron employee. It is on the Time Magazine web site at http://205.188.238.109/time/magazine/article/0,9171,1198927,00.html.

Enron's whistle-blower responds to the verdict
By SHERRON WATKINS

Posted Sunday, May 28, 2006
The reporter caught me while I was sitting in the sanctuary of First Presbyterian Church awaiting the joyous and celebratory graduation services of my daughter's grade school. "What do you feel about the verdicts?" Since I had met with Ken Lay in August 2001 to warn him of Enron's shady accounting and Lay for the most part ignored my warnings, the reporter wanted to know, "Do you feel vindicated?" My mood did not remain joyous or celebratory. I stammered something about being satisfied that justice prevailed. What I couldn't convey in words is a sense of sadness, sadness for what could have been.

In early 2001 Lay and Jeff Skilling, Enron's longtime leaders, unveiled a new mission statement. No longer would Enron strive to be "The World's Leading Energy Company"; we were going to be "The World's Leading Company." Why limit ourselves to energy? Enron was fast-paced, inventive, exciting; we epitomized the New Economy, able to innovate virtually overnight. Unfortunately, in life, our strengths can become our weaknesses. Just as the dark side of charisma is narcissism, the dark side of innovation is fraud. Enron fell victim to both. Our finance, accounting and legal departments pushed the use of off-balance-sheet vehicles over the line that separates creative transactions from fraudulent ones. Our corporate culture became narcissistic; we were focused on our image, not our customers or our products. The most alarming revelation is how easy it was to co-opt the outside world into joining us as we sang our praises: auditors, lawyers, bankers, the media.

Are we now less likely to fall victim to the next charismatic, innovative leader? I still wonder whether we truly recognize and value the appropriate traits in our leaders. We want honest leaders who are decisive, creative, optimistic and even courageous, but we so easily settle for talk that marks those traits instead of action. Worse, we often don't even look for one of the most critical traits of a leader: humility. A humble leader listens to others. He or she values input from employees and is ready to hear the truth, even if it is bad news. Humility is marked by an ability to admit mistakes.

There is no humility in either Skilling or Lay. As I watched Lay after the verdict, I was deeply dismayed by his inability to discern truth. He did not discern the truth of my warnings in August 2001. He failed to discern the truth of his own culpability; he refuses to take responsibility. He hides behind words of Scripture, but even these he misuses.

By the fall of 2001 Lay was telling us that Enron's future had never looked better, even as he was cashing in his Enron shares. By taking care of himself, Lay violated one of Jesus' leadership lessons, found in Mark 9:35: "If anyone desires to be first, he must be last of all, and servant of all." We need to applaud the servant-leader, the one who clearly demonstrates that the interests of the organization and its customers, employees and investors (in that order) come first, not his own. Humility is a critically important trait in leaders. We have to ask ourselves, Is our society cultivating humility? Do we exhibit that trait individually and collectively as a nation? Will we stop and learn from the Enron lesson in leadership failures, or will we just shrug our shoulders and thank God we're not Ken Lay?

Ken Lay = Alvin Wilbanks ?
School Board = Enrons 2001
Board?

Ask yourself, will you remain
silent and therefore participate
in this endeavor?

If our elected School Board had the childrens best interests in mind? They would immediately bring in a firm like Accenture or Bearing Point to conduct a top to bottom review of the policies and procedures in place at GCPS in all departments and let them issue recommendations...

However GCPS has a growing source and unlimited source of new funds unlike Enron due to Gwinnett's population growth and building boom. The source of funding being your property and sales taxes? Therefore no worries now...

Washington had Watergate; Gwinnett County has Alvingate!

Unfortunately, the majority of the people working in central office are too worried about keeping their jobs to be able to speak out. The environment of distrust and the Frances Davis Reign of Terror are overwhelmingly apparent in the new offices in Suwanee. Most employees have been with the county too long to risk giving up their retirement benefits and therefore continue to work in that unethical environment. Believe me, there are huge numbers of current employees reading this blog daily and nodding their heads in agreement. As a former employee of GCPS, I have seen first hand the damage that has been done and continues to happen by Frances Davis. How many employees has she hired from her church that had little or no experience? How many employees have lost their jobs or been moved to a different department because they had the audacity to question the Great Doctor Davis? And what happened to the Assistant Director of HR? Is her absence yet another internal scandal?

I continue to admire those of you who continue to plug away, mouths closed, eyes wide open, doing the work that the Public pays you to do. You are doing a great job! Hopefully you will soon be rid of the current Superintendent and his cronies and Gwinnett County will bring in a fresh group of leaders: Leaders who believe in ethical behavior, truth, honesty and who have the children of Gwinnett County as their priority.

Mr.Wilbanks in the legislative breakfast called for less Federal and State Mandates, as well as less oversight? Based on the discussion here I could understand why he would be in favor of that.

However is this really in the best interests of our kids and the taxpaying public. I do not think so!

I'd be interested on other folks opinion's on these statements?

Great timing on Wilbanks part to ask for this. Gwinnet County is in the process of becoming a dictator ship under Wilbanks.

He and his staff even with all this feel secure. Is it due to the "I scratch your back and you scratch mine", with the people in power in Gwinnett County who can do something about all the wasted spending from all the departments.

I am sure Wilbanks has stated he would be self policing of waste and unethical doings in the school system.

He is the king of his kingdom.

You need to read the article again that details the legislative breakfast. Wilbanks did ask for relief from unfunded mandates, but never asked for less oversite. He asked for more flexiblity, but not less oversite. Perhaps the blog administrator should stop filtering comments that are critical of the blog and spend more time checking facts. How can you claim credibility if you're going to post factual errors?

I don't see anything posted by the blog administration that even mentions Wilbanks breakfast.

Near the end of their tenure or dismissals/firings both Mr. Weiler and Mr. Knight were escorted off GCPS property by School System Police Officers. Why was this done ? Is this how all terminated employees are treated by Dr. Davis, hauled off by the police!!!

Not the way to treat your former CFO and Director of Internal Audit...

GCPS Directors are threatening employees verbally that they will try to trace their posting to this blog and HR will take action against them. I guess there is no comment or complaint box in School Employee breakrooms either?

Is Dr. Davis's Ph.D in thievery,
fraud and organized deception?

Alvin has had a great and successful career as well from Dekalb County Shop Teacher to mismanaging the largest school district in The Great State of Georgia.

Has anyone in HR checked their college transcripts to see if their degrees are legitimate?

Is it true that Keith Knight was trying to get some of his Internal Auditors or a particular Internal Auditor fired for poor work performance prior to his being fired???

I looked up the job description of the Board of Education Members. Interesting as to what they "should" be doing!

From my viewpoint, they aren't doing the following adequately:

- not enough “control” in place to ensure they are overseeing the Superintendent (#2).
- the staff, parents and local citizens are not permitted under this current administration to participate in the development of programs and policies (#3).
- most alarming is that there isn’t evidence of a teaching climate that ensures the best possible education because JAW won't allow the teachers to use their creativity, etc.(#4).

We need to call on the Board to act and do what they have been elected to do or allow us to put people on the Board that will.

Read on!

1)Provides an educational program and instructional arrangement which permits each child to develop to his/her full potential;
2)Develops and provides data appropriate for the management functions of planning, evaluating, organizing, controlling, and executing;
3)Ensures that staff, students, parents and all local citizens are provided the opportunity to participate in the develop and evaluation of programs and policies:
4)Provides an effective teaching climate to ensure the opportunity for the best possible education.
5)Provides a system level comprehensive school improvement plan that includes a component for staff development and professional development. In addition, the Board shall require the appointment of a staff development coordinate/director and a staff development advisory committee.

We all need to attend the Board Meeting on 12/14. If we want the Board Agenda to address our concerns, we must send a request to the Board by 12/7 with specific material that we wish to be covered. Perhaps a group of concerned parents should figure out a way to strategize prior to 12/7 so that we can ensure we are on the agenda and that our issues/concerns are addressed. As parents, we shouldn't be afraid of retalliation! If we stick together and demand that this be added, the Superintendent can't choose to leave it off the Agenda.

Please comment if there is interest and we can figure out a way to meet.

You need to list contact info for yourself so people can get in touch with you. A e-mail address or phone number?

In this day of free speech, how can our director threathen us with termination if we add to he blog and he finds out?

Because Georgia is a Right to Work State, you are an employee at will and can be terminated for any reason except those protected by Civil Rights Legislation. This allows them to act in a dictorial fashion which is very unfortunate and shortsighted. Organizations which fall under SOX are required to have Whistleblower procedures in place, and usually will have a place to turn in tips on their Website unfortunately not GCPS. It is unfortunate that Wilbanks feels it is okay to do things and stay right on the edge of the law and regulations. These things might be legal but highly unethical. It is also very unfortunate that the elected School Board turns a blind eye to all of this. It does not reflect well of them and their character.

Contact your State Legislator to change Georgia's Right to Work status. Employees should follow their conscience and do what they feel is the right thing!

I think A Concerned Parent's suggestion is a good one! We could meet at a library that's centrally located and discuss our concerns and presentation to the board. For those that would prefer to speak on their own, they could place themselves on the board agenda. Public comment is also available from 6:30-7:00 pm. ***But you will not be on the record and the board members won't respond to you during the public comment period (unless of course they like what you've said!).

Georgia may be a Right to Work State and you are an employee at will and can be terminated for any reason except those protected by Civil Rights Legislation AND THE CONSTITUTION. THE CONSTITUTION OVERRIDES ANY LAWS/RULES THAT STATES PASS OR PUBLIC ENTITIES USE THAT ARE IN DIRECT OPPOSITION TO IT! What that means translated is if they terminate you for that, but they can't use that as the reason.

Georgia is not a Right to Work state...it is a RIGHT TO FIRE state! Francis Davis can fire me becuase she thinks my shirt is the wrong color!!!
